Places and Spaces: imprints of past lives (I)

Here it is! The first in my series of short films retracing childhood steps. In collaboration with my brother, Alex McHattie, I've been rediscovering the places which first sowed the seeds of a my creative imaginings.

All these old photos were taken during the 70s at Warden Springs Caravan Park at Warden Point on the Isle of Sheppey. A place of stark wonder and strange, savage beauty which propelled my young imagination into wild adventures and fantastical notions.

What am I doing now?

A new project in the planning: dystopian landscapes and dis-used buildings echoing with the resonance of my younger self. We form ourselves to the shape of the places we inhabit early in life and, imprinted with their manners, become used to the space they afford us.

Thus, growing up in a little council flat, then a house from the same source, I prefer functional, sensible dwellings with small bathrooms and find expansive properties unnerving.

Savage beauty: every tide biting deeper.

What am I doing today?

Uploading my first You Tube clip (yeah, yeah, I know I'm a hundred years behind, technologically speaking).

It's a little piece I wrote for the occasion of my wedding which took place on the 15th September last year. I wanted to convey the tingly, anticipatory feeling that comes with being engaged - which seems to get largely glossed over amongst the madness of preparing for a wedding.

You can see the video here.

With thanks to Jan Simon for the video footage!
